Open the interactive tool: [llms.txt generator](https://atrby.site/tools/llms-generator). It runs in the browser, with no sign-up.

## What it does

llms.txt is a short markdown file at the root of your site that tells AI tools what your site is and which pages matter most. It was proposed in 2024 and the format is described at llmstxt.org.

This generator gives you the skeleton: a title, a one-line summary and a Docs section. It's a starting point, not a finished file. The guide below shows how to turn it into something useful.

Be clear about what it does today. No major search engine has said it uses llms.txt for ranking. Some AI tools and coding assistants read it when it's there, and it costs little to keep up to date.

## How to use it

1. Type your site or product name into “Site or product name”. This becomes the H1 title, the only part the format requires.
2. Write one sentence in “One-line summary” that says what you do and who it's for. It becomes the “>” line under the title.
3. Paste the address of your main documentation into “Docs URL”, then press “Run”.
4. Copy the output, add your other key pages as markdown links, and save it as llms.txt at the root of your domain, so it loads at example.com/llms.txt.

## What a complete llms.txt looks like

The proposal has a simple order. One H1 with the name. An optional blockquote summary. Optional plain text. Then H2 sections, each a list of links written as markdown, with a short note after a colon.

The generator writes your docs address as a markdown link under “## Docs”, with a placeholder note. Before you publish, replace the note with what the page covers, and add more sections for the pages that answer real questions.

- - [Getting started](https://example.com/docs/start): install and first steps
- - [Pricing](https://example.com/pricing): plans and limits
- ## Optional, for pages a tool can skip when it's short on space

## What to leave out

Keep it short. List the pages that explain your product, your pricing and your docs. Leave out tag pages, login pages and old blog posts. Use full https:// addresses, not relative paths.

If you want to give AI tools your full documentation as one file, a common convention is a second file called llms-full.txt. Keep llms.txt itself as the map.

## Questions

### Is llms.txt an official standard?

No. It's a community proposal published at llmstxt.org. It isn't an IETF or W3C standard, and support varies from tool to tool.

### Does llms.txt help my Google rankings?

There's no sign that it does. Google and other major search engines haven't said they use it for ranking. Treat it as a helpful map for AI tools, not an SEO lever.

### Where do I put the file?

At the root of your domain, served as plain text, so it loads at https://yourdomain.com/llms.txt. A file in a subfolder won't be found by tools that look for it at the root.

### How do I know if AI tools read it?

Check your server logs or analytics for requests to /llms.txt and the user agents behind them. atrby shows which AI crawlers fetch your pages and which AI assistants send visitors who go on to pay.
