Open the interactive tool: [HTTPS redirect checker](https://atrby.site/tools/ssl-checker). It runs in the browser, with no sign-up.

## What it does

Your site can be reached four ways: http and https, each with and without www. All four should land on one https address with permanent redirects, so nobody ends up on an insecure page and search engines see one site, not four.

This checker opens all four, follows each to where it ends, and shows the redirect codes on the way. It doesn't inspect the certificate, such as its issuer or expiry date; if an https connection fails, that version shows as an error.

## How to use it

1. Enter your domain in Domain, with or without www. Both forms are tested either way.
2. Press Check HTTPS redirects.
3. Read the table: Typed is where it started, Ends at is where it landed and with what status, and Via lists the redirect codes, or direct.
4. Check the findings: whether HTTPS works, whether each http version redirects to HTTPS, and whether there's one canonical host.

## What a good result looks like

Pick one canonical address, such as https://example.com. Two hops still work, but one is faster.

- https://example.com answers 200 directly.
- https://www.example.com redirects with a 301 or 308 to https://example.com.
- Both http versions redirect with a 301 or 308, ideally straight to https://example.com.

## Why the redirects should be permanent

A 301 or 308 tells search engines the https address replaces the http one, so links and rankings gather in one place. A 302 or 307 says the move is temporary, which can leave the http address in results. The checker flags an http version whose first redirect isn't permanent.

Once the redirects are right, add a Strict-Transport-Security header so browsers skip the insecure first request on later visits.

## Questions

### Does this check my SSL certificate?

No. A certificate problem that stops the connection shows as an error, but it doesn't show the issuer, expiry date or chain. View those in your browser or your host's dashboard.

### Should I use www or not?

Either works. Choose one and redirect the other to it. The WWW and DNS check also shows the DNS records for both names.

### Is HTTPS a ranking factor?

Google has used HTTPS as a small ranking signal since 2014, and browsers mark plain HTTP pages as not secure.

### Why does my browser show a 307 from http to https?

That's usually the browser applying HSTS itself, before anything reaches your server. This tool asks the server directly, so a 307 here is a real temporary redirect.

### Why does http go to https://www and then to non-www?

Your server upgrades to https first, then a second rule fixes the host. Combine the rules so http goes straight to the final address.
