What it does
Sometimes you don't need a crawl, just an answer: do these URLs still work? Old addresses after a migration, a list from a spreadsheet, pages a search console report flagged.
Paste up to 30 URLs and this checker requests each one, follows up to 5 redirects, and shows the final status code, where it ends and how many redirects it took.
How to use it
- 1Paste your list into URLs, one per line (up to 30). A bare domain is checked over https; duplicates are checked once.
- 2Press Check status codes.
- 3Read the table. Status is where each URL ends; if it redirected, Ends at shows the final address and the number of redirects.
- 4Copy or Download Results as CSV to sort the list in a spreadsheet.
Reading the status codes
Because redirects are followed, the Status column shows where each URL lands, not its first response.
- 2xx: the URL works.
- 3xx: the chain was longer than 5 redirects.
- 404 or 410: the page doesn't exist. 410 says it was removed on purpose.
- 403 or 429: the server refused an automated request. Check it in a browser.
- 5xx: the server failed. Try again before acting.
- An error instead of a code: no answer in time, a failed connection, or not a public address.
Checking a migration
Gather old addresses from your old sitemap or a backlink report and check them in batches. Each should end on a 200 at its new address after one redirect.
- An old URL ending on 404 needs a redirect to its closest replacement.
- More than one redirect is a chain. Point it straight at the final page.
- Many old URLs ending on the homepage suggests a catch-all redirect, which Google may treat as soft 404s.
Questions
Why only 30 URLs at a time?
Each URL can take several requests once redirects are followed, so the free check caps a batch at 30. Paste more and it says how many were left; run them as another batch.
What's in the CSV?
Four columns: url, status, final_url and redirects. When a URL couldn't be reached, status holds the error instead of a code.
Does it show each redirect hop?
It shows the final status and the number of redirects. To see every hop with its own code and timing, use the redirect checker.
What is a soft 404?
A page that says it doesn't exist but answers 200. A status check sees a working page, so open anything suspicious and read it.
